What is the Curly Girl Method?
The Curly Girl Method is a phrase that was coined by Loraine Massey in her book,Curly Girl: The Handbook. It refers to proper haircare that’s specifically designed for men and women who have curly hair.
With the help of tried-and-tested tips, the Curly Girl Method helps you find your hair’s natural texture and set those waves free in the healthiest way possible. There are different steps to do it, too, depending on the classification of your locks: wavy, curly, or coily.
The Dos and Don’ts of the Curly Girl Method
When it comes to taking care of your curly hair, you have to remember that it requires an approach that’s different from taking care of straight hair. Here are a few CGM-prescribed dos and don’ts to take note of:
DON’Tuse regular shampoo. CGM is also referred to as the “no poo” method for a reason: Shampoos with sulfates, silicones, and alcohol are particularly harsh and harmful to curly hair. That doesn’t mean that you have quit immediately; if you’re still searching for your perfect hair cleanser, you can opt to cut down on shampoo over time until your hair gets used to being without it.
DO use a cleansing conditioner or a “conditioner washing” (AKA co-washing) product. If you really have to shampoo just for cleansing purposes, use co-wash products commonly those that don’t have sulfates or silicones once a week.
These ingredients can help, too: gentle cleansers (cocamidopropyl betaine and decyl polyglucose), emollients (shea butter, olive, or vegetable oils), proteins (wheat, wheat germ, or soy), humectants (panthenol, vegetable glycerine, or sorbitol), and moisturizers (amino acids and aloe vera).
DON’Tuse regular combs or brushes.
DO use your fingers to work through your curls. Instead of having combs fix tangles and potentially breaking hair in the process, go for the gentler route and have your fingers do the untangling. Plus, while you’re doing it, you get to massage and work your Curly Girl Method hair products into your hair strands more thoroughly, too.
DON’Tuse heat styling tools, like flat or curling irons. The hydrogen bonds in hair are sensitive to heat and become more prone to breakage.
DO let your hair air-dry naturally and as often as possible. Depending on the type of your curl, you can also scrunch your hair with a microfiber towel to speed up drying without the frizz.
