Sanitation and public transit safety has probably been top of mind for you throughout quarantine. While these are valid concerns, itโs become apparent that weโve set aside the planet again in favor of convenience.
I recently read an article on the increase of plastic litter throughout the course of the Covid-19 pandemic. Sanitation concerns have resulted in a drastic spike in disposables, from masks to miscellaneous packaging. This means even more plastic waste will end up in the ocean before this year ends.
Yes, itโs important to stay safe. Yes, these things are helping us keep clean and preventing the possible spread of disease right now.
But once the pandemic is over, what do we do with all the waste our planet has accumulated?
For Plastic-Free July, Iโd like to issue a little challenge for all of us collectively: Committing to reduced waste where possible (without risking your health in the process).
1. If youโre ordering takeout, make sure itโs from places that use compostable food containers and reusable bags.
2. Purchase groceries from places that allow you to box or bag your goods. In case you didn't know, some online groceries pack produce in cardboard boxes or reusable containers.
3. Support local businesses with stringent safety and sanitation practices that may be more open to alternative packaging options with minimal plastic, if not plastic-free altogether.
4. If you arenโt a frontliner and donโt need to go to the hospital for any reason, skip the surgical masks! There are safe, fluid-resistant, non-disposable options that donโt have to end up in a landfill or the ocean.
Have you been working on ways to minimize your plastic waste despite our current circumstances? I'd love to hear your workarounds!
Love,
